The Department of Journalism in the School of Communication at Emerson College seeks a promising academic with professional experience in connecting communities with local, national and global issues through the practice of journalism on digital/multimedia platforms. This position is full-time in an open rank (assistant or associate professor), tenure-track/early tenure position. The appointment begins August 23, 2018.

Primary Duties, Responsibilities, and Tasks

Issues from health to immigration to entertainment and culture link local and ethnically diverse communities across borders. The Department of Journalism is seeking a faculty member who will extend its efforts to educate students to respond to the demand for journalism that explains those links and engages diverse communities in authentic ways. This faculty member also would work with the department’s new learner-centered curriculum to expand the uses of new and varied communication tools and journalistic story forms in reporting and producing community journalism.

This individual will enhance existing course offerings such Beat Reporting Across Media, Public Affairs Reporting, Deep Reporting, Advanced Multimedia Reporting, Long-form Storytelling, Editing and Web Producing, and develop new courses such as Globalization in the Community, or Covering Gentrification and Immigration, as well as creating other courses to satisfy its required Advanced Journalism Diversity Course.

Candidates must have a Master’s degree (Ph.D. or terminal degree highly preferred). The ideal candidate will have teaching experience, at least five years of professional experience in community journalism across varied media platforms, and a portfolio of research and/or professional work that enhances or explores the intersection of communities and global issues. We expect candidates to have a vibrant professional practice and/or research agenda that they will continue to pursue in creative ways that can potentially include students. They should also be interested in working with co-curricular student journalism organizations. Members of historically underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.
